Originally built in Dungeon Street in the 18th Century, the Workhouse was moved to Fountain Street in the 1850s. The building was started in 1850 but hadn't been finished by the date of the 1851 census
It subsequently became Tameside General Hospital.
In the 19th Century no one wanted to enter the Workhouse. Sadly in 2010, many folk fear going into Tameside Hospital !
In 1911 The Workhouse Census was divided between those in the Workhouse and those in the Infirmary.
