cake a pie clock

The Cake A Pie Clock was visible throughout Hurst, but sadly was destroyed by fire a couple of years ago. In my youth,(the 1960s) the mill was fully operational and owned by Rank Hovis McDougall but I understand that before their ownership, <Cake A Pie> was a company in its own right.

The building had Cake A Pie inscribed in the lintels above the door.

The roof was often used by young boys as a playing field in the 1930s although it was dangerous as there were no safety barriers around the perimeter. Fortunately no-one was the worse for wear although this activity has been prevented by securing the perimeter fences at night

In front of the clock was the Roxy Cinema.

On the site of the Roxy is a Co-op supermarket and on the site of the Cake-a-Pie is a small housing development.

The location is next to the site of the Roxy Cinema on Queens Road.
